Appraisals are used in a variety of different scenarios. Many Banks, Financial Institutions, and Lawyers use appraisals to determine the value of equipment when loaning money, purchasing equipment, or settling estates. Many Business Owners use appraisals to determine the value of their equipment in case there is ever a need to sell equipment quickly, produce records for tax purposes, liquidations, mergers, or acquisitions.
Certified Desktop Summary Appraisal Report – Based on client-provided information, such as type, make, model, serial number, original cost, purchase date, and condition of the piece of machinery. The report is as accurate as the information provided.
Certified On-Site Summary Appraisal Report – Based on appraiser-gathered information, the report is the result of the appraisal specialist's inspection of the machinery and collection of the relevant data.
Appraisal costs can vary depending on each individual situation. Costs vary between the different types of appraisals (Desktop vs. On-Site) and factors affecting the appraisal costs may include; travel and lodging costs, inspection costs, and amount of equipment or machinery being appraised.
It is recommended to have your equipment submitted for a certified desktop appraisal at least once a year. This ensures that you have an accurate fair market value on file for your equipment to determine the value of your business assets at all times and that you are not overpaying for insurance, taxes, etc.
You should also always have your equipment appraised before any financial transactions occur (purchasing, selling, financing, company mergers, liquidations, or acquisitions, etc.) to ensure that the transaction occurring is fair.
When getting an appraisal performed, it is imperative to choose an appraiser with experience in dealing with that which is getting appraised. Choosing an appraiser who is knowledgeable in the industry is critical in making sure that you receive a fair appraisal of your equipment. When receiving an appraisal on heavy equipment, choosing an appraiser with expertise in the real estate, restaurant, or medical industries may not produce an appraisal as accurate as an appraiser whose expertise is with heavy equipment.
It is also imperative to make sure that your Appraisal is compliant with the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP). USPAP-compliant appraisals are authorized by the U.S. Congress for use in courts and with insurance companies or financial institutions.
